Welsh Lib Dems unveil ambitious house building plans

The Welsh Liberal Democrats are today announcing ambitious manifesto proposals to build 20,000 new affordable homes during the next Assembly.

In a speech hosted by the Chartered Institute of Housing Cymru, Peter Black AM will state that his party will double the current Social Housing Grant budget of £35million per year to £70million per year in the next Assembly term and set a target of 20,000 new affordable homes over the same period. This would be double the Labour Government’s target for the current term.

Mr Black also announced that the party would make it a statutory requirement for the Welsh Government to set a target for new affordable homes at the beginning of each Assembly term and to report on progress annually.

Peter Black, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Housing Minister, said:

"The Welsh Liberal Democrats are the only party with the ambition to tackle Wales’ housing crisis. We believe that every person should be able to provide a secure environment for their family.

"Wales needs a government that will invest in a house building programme so everyone can have a roof over their heads. Sadly, under the Labour Government in Wales, that ambition has been completely lacking.

"For decades, successive Conservative and Labour governments have not built enough homes. This has left us with a crippling undersupply of housing while demand for social housing has soared. Welsh Liberal Democrats will take action to address this imbalance.

"We would scrap the M4 relief road and use Wales’ new borrowing powers to fund this capital investment. Instead of blowing one billion pounds on a single piece of road, we would make social housing a priority so that there is quality, affordable social housing for those who need it."

Notes: The Main Current Programme Cash Limited Allocation for new housing within the Social Housing Grant budget is £35million per year. The Welsh Liberal Democrats will double this to £70m per year in the next Assembly term.

The Welsh Government’s target for the current Assembly term is to build 10,000 new affordable homes between 2011-2016. The Welsh Liberal Democrats would double this target for the next Assembly term.
