The Welsh Liberal Democrats have selected postgraduate student Charley Hasted to fight the Swansea East constituency on 8th June.
Charley Hasted was born in and raised in South London but has strong Welsh roots through family in Bridgend. Having been a parental carer since childhood, Charley understands the many demands put on carers. A former youth worker, teaching assistant and disability rights advisor, Charley has a degree in law from Staffordshire University and will be starting a masters degree in Development and Human Rights in Swansea later this year. Amongst Charley’s hobbies are an enthusiasm for Rugby Union and Formula One.
Commenting on the selection, Charley said that the Liberal Democrats are offering a real alternative to voters who are concerned about the way that the UK Government are handling Brexit:
“Those who voted Remain last year, and many leave voters as well, are concerned at the implications of the Tory approach to us leaving the European Union. They understand that if we leave the single market that jobs will be lost and the cost of living will go up. With so many people in Swansea East dependent on food banks that is a particular concern.
“The Liberal Democrats accept the outcome of the referendum but we believe that whatever deal is struck with the EU should be put before the electorate for them to approve or reject. This is too big a decision, with huge implications for generations to come, to be entrusted to politicians alone.”
