Peter Black blasts Tory empty promises on housing

Peter Black AM has today blasted the Tories for failing to say how many homes they would build.

The Conservatives have announced today that they “recognise the need for 70,000 new properties in Wales” but have not said how many a Conservative government would build.

Commenting, Peter Black, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Housing Minister, said:

“Once again we see the Tories talking big, but offering little in substance.

“The Tories have completely failed to say today how many homes they as a government would build.  They have simply plucked a random number out of thin air and said they would rely on the private sector to deliver the goods. However, house builders are not delivering because they can make bigger profits over the border and the Welsh Government do not have all the tools to change that in the short to medium term.

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats have been clear that we would double the current Welsh Government target by building 20,000 new affordable homes.  That is the minimum amount we as government would build. We would lift restrictions that have impacted on Welsh house builders ability to build more homes and look to the private sector to add significantly to the 20,000 new homes we will build.

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats believe that that every person should be able to provide a secure environment for their family.  That is why we will double Labour’s unambitious house building target.

“Our vision for an Opportunity Economy means that everyone would have a roof over their head and through our 1st time buyer’s scheme, we would help people achieve their dream of owning their own home.”
