A reflection on seventeen years as an AM

This is an article for Seaside News

As of May this year I will have been an Assembly Member for seventeen years. It has been a privilege to have represented this area.

That does not mean that this article is a valedictory, far from it. I fully intend to be back. But regular elections do enable me to reflect on my time so far as well as to look to the future.

In those seventeen years I have been involved in many campaigns, not least the fight to regenerate Porthcawl, against the closure of Bridgend law courts, working with the trustees of the Porthcawl museum to keep it open, with campaigners to retain full accident and emergency, paediatric, neo natal, and obstetric services at Princess of Wales Hospital and against the imposition of excessive service charges on tenants by Valleys to Coast.

I have also taken up thousands of individual cases. There is no greater satisfaction than helping somebody get the treatment they need, repairs to their homes or a blue badge they need.

So I just wanted to use this article to thank every one of you for giving me the opportunity to do this job, and to look forward to serving you further in the future.
