The Welsh Liberal Democrats have announced that Amina Jamal is to be their candidate for Swansea East in the General Election in May.
Mrs Jamal, the daughter of the late John and Jean Nicholls, was born in Gwili Terrace, and lived in Cockett and Townhill during her early life. She attended Gors Avenue and Bishop Vaughan Schools, Tycoch College and Swansea Institute before training as a nurse at Neath General Hospital. She has a Masters’ degree in Health Education and Health Promotion from The Cardiff School of Medicine.
She subsequently worked as a Health Promotion Specialist at Cardiff Community Health Care, for Iechyd Morgannwg Health Authority, Neath Port Talbot Health Board and Public Health Wales before retiring.
She is widowed with three grown-up daughters. Formerly a school governor at Clwyd Primary School, she is currently a governor at Burlais Primary School. Amina is a past member of Swansea Bay Race Equality Council. She has lived in Pentregethin Road Manselton for more than 30 years.
Commenting on her selection, Mrs Jamal said: "As somebody who was born and brought up in Swansea, who has brought up a family here and who is a regular user of local services, I am pleased to be able to offer myself for election for a community where my family and I have deep roots.
"Swansea needs a strong voice speaking up for the City in Westminster. I believe that my experience and my knowledge of the area makes me an ideal person to provide that voice and to fight on behalf of people in Swansea East for the local jobs, local investment and local services that our community deserves."
