Historic new law will help thousands of mobile home residents

This is an article for Seaside News

On Wednesday 25th September the Welsh Assembly passed its very first private members bill since it got its new powers in 2011. The Bill that I sponsored has important outcomes for thousands of owners of residential mobile or park homes around Wales, including here in Bridgend.

Since I announced that I was bringing this bill forward I have been contacted by many park home owners who have told me about abusive behaviour by a minority of site owners to them and their neighbours, site owners misusing the existing law to block the sale of their homes so as to force the sale to themselves at a knock-down price, poor maintenance and problems with the recharging of electricity, gas and water. There have also been incidents where home owners have been intimidated into not organising as a legitimate residents association.

The Bill, once it has received royal assent and has been commenced by the Housing Minister seeks to tackle all that. The Bill duties on local councils and gives them the resources to deal with abuses through a new five year site licence. There are also new rights and protections for home owners. Contact me at peter.black@wales.gov.uk if you need more details.
