The Welsh Liberal Democrats have selected Howard Evans, a local teacher to fight the Gower constituency on 8th June. Howard has fought the constituency before, for the Assembly in 1999.
Mr. Evans has been teaching for 24 years and is an Assistant Head Teacher at Penyrheol Comprehensive School. He lives in Craig Cefn Parc with his partner, and has roots in Reynoldston and Gower generally where his family farmed.
He has served two four yearly terms as a Community Councillor - firstly in Reynoldston and then Mawr. He was Clerk to Reynoldston Community Council for almost 21 years, Chairman of the Mawr Development Trust for 12 years until it had to place itself into voluntary liquidation due to a falling number of members/volunteers and he has been a Teacher Governor at Penyrheol Comprehensive School. He is in his third term as a Community Governor at Craig Cefn Parc Primary School. Together with his business partner he has just commenced a tourism business.
In his spare time Howard is a season ticket holder at Swansea City Football Club, enjoys managing a small area of woodland that he owns and plays hockey for Swansea City Hockey Club.
Commenting on his selection, Howard said he was proud to be able to represent the Liberal Democrats in a constituency where he has such deep roots:
“Gower is an area where the Liberal Democrats have under-performed in the past, however with Labour in trouble in the polls and with the Tories advocating a hard Brexit that will hit jobs and prosperity badly, I believe that my party can do well on 8th June. The Liberal Democrats clear message of fighting to keep the UK in the single market and giving people a final say on whatever deal is struck with Europe is going down well with many voters. We are now the only responsible and effective opposition to the Tories.”
