Following significant pressure from the Welsh Liberal Democrats, the Labour Government in Wales has today agreed to scrap its plans to weaken tenants’ rights in the Renting Homes Bill.
Currently tenants must be offered a minimum of six months residency when they begin their contract. The Welsh Government’s Renting Homes bill intended to abolish this right, known as the ‘six month moratorium’. However, in committee today the Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty has agreed this element of the bill will be withdrawn.
Peter Black AM, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Housing Minister, said:
"These plans were an attack on tenants’ rights and a disaster waiting to happen. I am pleased that the Government has seen sense and performed this u-turn.
"Removing the six month minimum tenancy rule would have put tenants in a much more uncertain and unsecure position, especially given more vulnerable people will be housed in the private sector under this bill.
"It is absolutely right that the Minister listened to my concerns on this matter. Again, this shows the Welsh Liberal Democrats are the strongest opposition party in the National Assembly.
"There are still remaining issues with the bill. We still have concerns about the provision for exclusion orders for those in supported accommodation and I believe this could be in breach of human rights legislation.
"The Welsh Liberal Democrats are the only party consistently talking about housingin Wales. We have the ambition and aspiration to tackle Wales’ housing crisis by doubling the amount of affordable homes being built".
