The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black has welcomed the news that Swansea’s Morriston Hospital is to receive £3.275m this year to provide three state of the art operating theatres as a result of the budget deal between the Welsh Government and the Welsh Liberal Democrats last year. The work is expected to be completed by April 2015.
In a letter to Mt. Black, the Health Minister says that the funding will enable the health board to provide three state of the art robotic theatres in Morriston Hospital serving patients across the region in specialities such as ENT, bariatrics, and urology. He continues by saying that the development of laparoscopic or keyhole surgery will deliver a number of significant benefits, including improved patient outcomes, workforce recruitment and retention, and improving the status of Morriston as a centre of excellence to deliver further developments in surgical techniques.
Mr. Black said: “This is great news for Morriston Hospital, and is a really significant development that will enhance Morriston’s position as a centre of excellence.
“It has come about as a direct result of the Welsh Liberal Democrats’ successful budget negotiations with the Welsh Labour Government last year.
“Patients across our region will benefit from the latest techniques. We will see recovery times reduce, patient outcomes improve, and the risks that come with any surgery decrease.
“This investment will also mean that skilled staff will be motivated to stay, and others will be attracted to come and work at Morriston.
“That is why we made this investment a priority when we were negotiating with Labour.”
